Toruń

Am Dienstag, dem 3. Mai, feierten die Polen ihren Nationalfeiertag, den Verfassungstag "Święto Konstytucji Trzeciego Maja". An diesem Tag ruht ganz Polen, alle haben frei. Und da auch der erste Mai jedes Jahr ein Feiertag ist, nehmen die meisten gleich drei Tage Urlaub und feiern den Mai-Beginn mit einem Ausflug. Magda und ich haben uns dieser "Tradition" angeschlossen und das Mai-Wochenende von Samstag bis Dienstag in Toruń verbracht. Es ist vor allem berühmt als Geburtstadt von Nikolaus Kopernikus und für die Lebkuchen "Pierniki", die nur hier hergestellt werden. Außerdem ist die gesamte Altstadt Unesco-Weltkulturerbe, überall finden sich mittelalterliche Wohn- und Lagerhäuser. Eine wunderschöne Stadt!

On Tuesday, 3rd of May, the Poles celebrated their national holiday, the day of the constitution "Święto Konstytucji Trzeciego Maja". As the first of May is a holiday as well, a lot of people are taking a day off on the 2nd of May and start the month with a trip. Magda and I followed this "tradition" and spent the days in Toruń. It is famous for being the birthplace of Nikolaus Kopernikus and for "pierniki" - gingerbread that is only produced here. Furthermore, the beautiful old-town is listed as Unesco-worldheritage-site. A great place!

Obwohl es wirklich kalt war, (trotz des Sonnenscheins) wagten wir uns für 40 Minuten auf das Deck eines Ausflugsschiffes. Although it was really cold, we decided to enjoy the view of the town on a boat-trip:

Zwei Stunden Zugfahrt von Toruń entfernt liegt Malbork, die flächenmäßig größte Burg der Welt, ebenfalls von den Deutschorden-Rittern erbaut. Wir brauchten viereinhalb Stunden, um die Ausstellungen anzusehen. Es war definitiv atemberaubend!
Two hours by train from Toruń lies Malbork, the largest castle in the world by area, built by the Teutonic Knights. We spent 4 1/2 hours walking through the exhibitions. It was breathtaking!

Auf dem Weg zurück nach Legnica... lag Schnee auf den Feldern! On the way back to Legnica, there was snow on the fields! (THAT is "severe weather" for you, NOT snow in december, dear people of Dartford Grammar School! ;-) )
